Weekly Rewind

This week has been an incredibly tough one in our fair country. But before we get into the guts of it all a brief recap.

Amazing finds

On the ‘gram if you follow me you would have caught some of my many adventures, like this rainy day find. I thought this broken clock was amazing – found it on my walk through my neighborhood while on my way to run errands.

Felt like sharing my mani and my awesome ring party one day before heading out and don’t forget my bit of adult humor with my Throwback Thursday.

Tv

The Astronaut Wives Club premier was surprisingly good. Although,  I found the progression a bit slow and some of the females characters a bit tawdry but who knows what time will tell.

The return of Fx’s summer hit Tyrant for it’s second season left many at the edge of their seat after last season’s finale and had me personally wanting for more – can’t wait to see what else is in store.

As the Mistresses 2-hour premier opened whirlwind back stories and revealed major plot twists one big thing was missing -Savi! Sadly as the show’s production moved to Montreal Alyssa Milano decided she would not continue on and sadly her character was written out of the script with a tear jerking exit. The premier ended with one heck of a cliffhanger and also introduced a new polarizing character – more deets as the season continues!

Comedy Central is adding a new scripted show dated in a whole other time period (bad joke intended). The series, Another Period, whose pilot premiers this week will star comedic acts Natasha Leggero and Riki Lindhome.

Media

Cookie Lyons – I mean Empire actress, Taraji P. Henson, who portrays matriarch, Cookie Lyons on Fx’s ht series, “Empire” was hospitalized for what her rep. has noted as exhaustion. The star herself also joked about her hospitalization as a sign of simply, “doing too much”, and even referenced a line from the shows last season, “Don’t worry y’all I’m a tough cookie! HA! I will be just fine.

Dra-medy (drama – comedy), Dope, written and directed by Nigerian-American Rick Famuyiwa; writer and director of afro films like, The Wood and Brown Sugar; and produced by Pharell Williams and Forest Whitaker, also the narrator; made it’s world debut this past weekend. The film which featured familiar faces like A$ap Rocky, Kimberly Elise, Zoe Kravitz and Rick Fox, premiered with strong box office stats, coming in at number 5 and raking in $6,100,010 (USA)  since it’s  June 19th release.

President Obama with comedian Marc Maron for an on the “WTF” podcast

     Major news network were in a pickle this past week when deciding to cover or air an interview done y the POTUS on the “WTF” podcast with comedian Marc Maron, where President Obama spoke candidly when he addressed the long history of racism in the United States. The quote that had so many outlets, like Politico, CNN and Cnn.com, The New Tork Times and the Associated Press, along with television networks ABC and NBC News, in a tiff;

Racism, we are not cured of,” Obama said. “And it’s not just a matter of it not being polite to say nigger in public. That’s not the measure of whether racism still exists or not. It’s not just a matter of overt discrimination. Societies don’t, overnight, completely erase everything that happened 200 to 300 years prior.

While some platforms chose to bleep or censor the n-word out CNN as well as the Associate Press and the New York Times which picked up AP’s story, chose to run the interview in full with the quote unedited. The logic, “We wanted to avoid any unsuspecting rip and read of our story resulting in ‘n—–‘ getting on the air,” according to AP spokesperson Paul Colford, “Our reasoning was: It’s the president talking, and using that specific word to make a point,“.

Music

James Horner, a hollywood film composer for films like Titanic, Braveheart, Star Trek, A Beautiful Mind, Field of Dreams, Apollo 13 and Avatar died in a tragic plane crash near Santa Barbara, California. The 2-time Oscar and Academy Award winner was 61.

For all the lovers of 90’s and early 2000’s R&B the return of musician, D’Angelo with his latest album, Black Messiah, is a refreshing drink of water in an arrid desert.

Say what you may about Taylor Swift, hate her or love her, she sure knows how to stay in the news. The country singer turned pop artist has take tech giant, Apple to task, one week before it’s new music streaming service, Apple music, launches. In an open letter, the artist called out the billionaire company for it’s unwillingness to pay artists in it’s three-month free trial period for the service’s users. Swift, who had the top-selling album release last year with “1989” in the fall and boasts 59.2 million Twitter subscribers, has become one of the most vocal celebrity critics of the business of music streaming, swiftly (pun intended) moved to have all of her music including her hit album 1989 blocked from the  company. If there should be any indicator that she doesn’t bluff, Swift who had previously lamented the general effect of piracy and streaming on paid album sales, removed her music from streaming service Spotify last November.

Taking pointers on the “spotify” sitch with Swift, Apple exec, Eddy Cue quickly responded with the following tweet:

Swift who says that her decision to withhold her album, “is about the new artist or band that has just released their first single and will not be paid for its success…“.

Since Apple’s response, she has been quoted expressing how elated she was at the decision and looks forward to the company’s negotiation for higher payouts to royalty holding at the end of the 3 month period, which was it’s initial plan.

Since then the pop stars’s fans including boyfriend, DJ Calvin Harris have tweeted their support. Good work Ms. Swift.

Jott uses an AirChat feature to allow users to send data and texts without a connection to the Internet. Jott uses Bluetooth and Wi-Fi radios to create a closed network with other devices that are within 100-feet of each other.

Ever heard of Jott? Me either. But this amazing new messaging app is making the rounds. With a whopping 500, 000 monthly users and one million app installs after just three months on the market, and may soon rival apps like whatsapp, snapchat. etc. with one simple twist, you don’t necessarily need to have internet or phone service connection or even a phone!

          So how does it work?

The apps CEO and co-founder explained.

The app’s AirChat feature allows users to send data and texts without a connection to the Internet. Jott uses Bluetooth and Wi-Fi radios to create a closed network with other devices that are within 100-feet of each other.

Jott also features social media must-haves, including stickers, screen shot detection, disappearing texts and photos. The app also offers advanced security measures. Unlike YikYak, another popular messaging app for teens, Jott users have to provide their real names, birth dates, phone numbers or e-mails and location to gain access to a school network.

Though the app currently has major fans in the middle school highschool crowd, with virtually the entire customer base for Jott is made up of 13 to 18 year olds, an intentional marketing demographic, which has helped Jott close a $1.8 million seed funding round from several prominent venture capital firms.

However, teen texting is not all the apps founder hope it will be used for, in the future, Allgood believes that Jott could be used for more than just teen texting, envisioning it as a potential life-saver during a natural disaster.

Although it wasn’t built specifically for emergency communication, the founders say it could easily be adapted for that purpose.

“When cell phone towers go down and your texts no longer work, Jott messages will get routed through because it’s devised through the device,” Allgood explained. “You could be on top of Mount Everest or on an airplane completely disconnected and yet still be able to send text messages.

Fashion

Come Fall 2015 as the new semester and Fashion Week spring/summer 2016 roll in, Fordham University, here in New York,  will roll out it’s new Fashion Law degree program. I haven’t gathered all the details yet but this should be incredibly interesting to say the least.

Former Mulberry creative director, Emma Hill has announced that she will soon be introducing the world to her own accessories line, Hill and Friends. A collaboration with Georgia Fendley – also hailing from Mulberry, where she was brand director – the label will launch at a presentation in London Fashion Week in September, with product being available to purchase the following day from its own website and Net-A-Porter. The brand reportedly plans to add ready-to-wear to its offering later down the line, but is currently focused solely on accessories while looking to secure two retail outlets on home turf in London and Stateside in New York.

Proenza Schouler sells stakes, securing funding from Castanea Partners, in a move long rumored to happen. The deal, of which details have not been disclosed, will see the private-equity firm join exisiting investors who purchased a 50 per cent stake in the brand from the Valentino Fashion Group and others in 2011.

Isabel Marant found herself embroiled in a plagiarism row, after the indigenous Mixe community in Santa Maria Tlahuitoltepec, Oaxaca, southern Mexico have accused her of copying their traditional dress for pieces in her spring/summer 2015 Etoile Isabel Marant collection. Also, fellow French fashion house Antik Batik have laid claim to the Marant design and are currently in the middle of legal proceedings of their own. Isabel Marant, however, insists that its founder and designer has been open about the origin and inspiration for the design and is hoping to credit the Mixe community herself.

News

It was one heck of a news week last week that left me wondering if for a second I had stepped into the twilight zone.2015-06-24 19.51.18

Also making the news this week was the mass shooting in a historic Charleston, SC church where nine were killed by an armed gunman, in what is perceived as a racially motivated act of violence. More as the story unfolds. Till then pray for the families in mourning and the people of Charleston. #Blacklivesmatter2015-06-19 05.12.40

In international news; there has been continuous violence against Hatians and Dominicans born to Hatian parents in the island state of the Dominican Republic. Coming to a head there has been issued a decree for a “Social Cleansing”of sorts with mass deportations, marked by stripping Dominican born Hatians of any citizenship and would displace more than 250,000 people, many of whom are second generation Hatians and have no ties the language or culture of the neighboring nation.

Around the Web

Here’s something funny I discovered browsing on the web that I thought might brighten your day and or week:

A sign in a Singapore playground

More from around the web:

So, it seems like medical science is at it again with a vaccine for chlamydia in the works. Now this is not the first time a vaccine against the sexually transmitted infection has bee proposed but there seems to have been some extremely great breakthroughs this time around. The vaccine won’t be available for human testing for a few years, but trials in mice showed that a nasal spray elicited an immune response against chlamydia for up to six months.

And making history, a French teen becomes the first female on the of MLB’s international list.

Look Ahead

I’m super excited for the premier of the line, Cupcakes and Cashmere by blogger Emily Schuman who blogs over at Cupcakes and Cashmere. Will keep you posted.
