In honor of Rei Kawakobo/Commes des Garcons

Monday night’s annual celebration of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute’s Met Gala 2017 marked one of the highlights of New York City’s spring time festivities.

Often marked by some of the most daring and albeit stunning gowns and silhouettes; everyone remembers Rihanna at the 2015 Gala, Beyonce’s latex gown at last year’s red carpet and who could forget Kim K at 2013’s event; the annual Gala serves as one of the museum’s biggest fundraising events and is typically the grand opening of the annual design exhibit.

Weekly Rewind

Hey again guys,

Can you believe we’re already half-way through the first month of 2016!? Geesh where does the time go.

So getting back to one of my original features of the blog, I thought it would be a good time for a Weekly Rewind to catch up on all the happenings of the past week and some.

So, here we go.

I haven’t been to busy on the ‘gram lately as my life has not been all that crazy with my least favorite season in full swing.

The Blog

As promised I have made a conscious effort to be more active on the blog and to work on building this experience into one worthwhile.

il_340x270.896902427_gk3pCan you believe it has been one year since I decided to take the plunge and begin this blog!?! I celebrated this milestone with an extra special #FunFactFriday by sharing a few personal fun facts.

  • An important #FunFactFriday about the importance of Blood Donation in honor of Blood Donation Awareness Month and sharing a few interesting facts for any of you who would be interested in getting involved.

  • On Demand Tv is In – with streaming services killing the nominations at the Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards. Ratings numbers are through the roof and Netflix, with a line-up of more than 20+ original shows due out this year alone, and let’s not forget Hulu and Amazon Tv doing their thing, cable may soon be obsolete. Hint, HBO has already gotten onboard with the idea of being a solely streaming service.504412260-actress-taraji-p-henson-poses-with-the-award-for-best.jpg.CROP.rtstoryvar-medium
  • Taraji P. Henson’s won big at the Golden Globes becoming the third African American Woman to win the Award for BEst Actress in a TV Drama;

  • The Revenant finally took up speed at the top of the box office list last weekend beating out Star Wars: The Force Awakens which had sat at the top since it’s December 18th release. This momentum could only see improvements after Leonardo Di Caprio’s win at the Golden Globes – and now 12 Oscar nods, including Best Picture, Best Director (Alejandro González Iñárritu), Best Actor (Leonardo DiCaprio), and Best Supporting Actor (Tom Hardy), but this is an exceptional hold.2015-12-16-1450300622-8118374-Star_Wars.png
  • Star Wars: The Force Awakens has fallen to the third place in this weekends box office listing but this comes after 5 weeks running strong and in the wake of The Revenant‘s big wins and nods. That however has no effect on it’s earnings though as the film has hit $1 billion overseas and is aimed at grossing ~ $2 billion worldwide, so no worries!Jennifer-Lopez---InStyle-Cover-2016--01-662x903.jpg
  • JLo keeps it young and fresh on the February cover of Instyle magazine and tells of some of her secrets to her continued youth, happiness and success.
  • With all the controversy and debate around #BlackGirlMagic – from Elle‘s (maybe ill-advised feauture article “Here’s My Problem with #BlackGirlMagic” by Dr. Linda Chavers and Ashley Ford’s rebuttal “There is Nothing Wrong with Black Girl Magic” for the same publication), to the twitter comments and “conversations”, Essence magazine chose to emphasize the hashtag’s significance to Black culture by highlighting some of the awesome black girls who are currently being great!

p.s. don’t miss Amandla Stenberg with her #BlackGirlMagic on the cover of Teen Vogue.

  • January is Glaucoma Awareness Month. Get Educated. Get checked. Know your family history. Protect your eyes.

  • Twitter users now able to view periscope videos without leaving app. So yea for catching up on all the cute videos in the world you love to see.

  • So finally those Hedi Slimane rumors can be put to rest – earlier this year the rumor mill was abuzz with news that Creative Director for the Fashion Houe, Saint laurent was leaving the company – however that has since been debunked.

  • Jason-3, a U.S. – European Satellite has launched from California and will measure the shape of the global sea surface to an accuracy of better than 4cm. It will also track currents, tides, winds, wave heights, and will help forecast the intensity of storms. But with a new mission of also maintaining the reference data-set on sea-level rise as a response to continued Global warming. Thus far it shows the world’s oceans to be rising at more than 3mm per year!

Festival Season

With Festival season having kicked off earlier this year in March with the South by SouthWest Music Festival the anticipation for another summer of music, fun and free spirited revelry has begun. The last two weekends have only added to the angst in the wake of one of the largest festivals of the season, Coachella, kicking off with record turn outs and amazing performances.

Feeding off of energy of the recently ended festival that has kicked both the fashion and music worlds into high gear let’s take a look at some of the other greatly anticipated festivals to come this summer!

The New Orleans Jazz Festival neworleans_jazzfest_header_20151

One of the most diverse concert series, the festival will feature twelve stages that will host performers such as Elton John, The Who, Keith Urban, Pitbull, T.I. Jimmy Cliff, Anthony Hamilton, The O’jays, John Legend and Estelle as well as artists from across every genre. Not only will the festival be home to exceptional showcases but also Louisiana’s own unique culture. This lineup does not sound like one to be missed.

The Roots Picnic revo_onsalenowinfo

With featured artists the roots, fellow hip-hop and rap performers such as A$AP Rocky, Erykah Badu, The Weekend and Afrika Bambaataa join in celebrating the culture that raised generations in the City of Brotherly Love.

The New York City Parks Foundation Summer Stage Concert Series

Usually one of the most anticipated free concert series for city dwellers like myself. The annual summer series has seen the likes of Janelle Monae, John Legend, Kes and the Band and several other international artists from across the music world bless the city’s parks. I am especially excited to see what’s in store for this summer. *fingers crossed.

Music by Funk Master Flex and Ebro as well as Festival stage performances by Travi$ Scott, B.o.B, Joey Bada$$, DeJ Loaf and Teyana Taylor. The Festival village will feature street art, grafitti booths and cooling stations amongst other attractions to add to what is boasted to be the most epic night in hip hop.

Bonnaroo – June 11th – 14th (Manchester, TN)

For the free-spirited adventurers this music festival features arts, music, dancing, open air and nature to the tune of artists like Earth, Wind and Fire, Billy Joel, Childish Gambino, SZA and Mumford and Sons.

Glastonbury 2015 Music Festival (Pilton, UK)Glastonbury_Logo-300x150

And across the pond from June 24th to the 28th the British version of Coachella kicks into full swing drawing celebrity crowds to rival those on our side of the Atlantic. The bill markets the series as a series of electronic, indie, pop and rock music. Started the day after the death of Jimi Hendrix in 1970, Glastonbury is the largest greenfield festival in the world with the grounds encompassing eight and a half miles and big ticket acts like the Foo Fighters and Lionel Richie for starts. Sounds like good fun!

Essence Music Festival – July 2nd – 5thstd_header_2015

One of the largest Music festivals, the Essence Music festival is not just about the music but also the gathering of thousands of African Americans and fans of the festival for a celebration of culture mingled with the history and essence of New Orleans. Be on the look out for repeat performers Erykah Badu, India Arie, Mary J Blige, Doug E Fresh and Common as well as a new generation of artists like Elle Varner, Kendrick Lamar and music Veterans Missy Elliot, Tweet, Usher, Tank and the Bangas and Raheem Devaughn. Besides the festivals performers some of the country’s top Djs will also be spinning at the hottest events of the season, so you don’t want to miss out!

Taking place in Chicago’s Grant Park this amazing festival hosts a multitude of artists ranging from Paul McCartney and Sam Smith to Metallica, The Weekend, Kid Cudi, Kaskade, Of Monsters and Men, Tyler the Creator, FKA Twigs and Charli XCX. This is an ultimate summer line up for music fans everywhere. Keep an ear out for any further announcements to the already burgeoning list of hit-makers set to grace the stage. Seems like it will be a great one!

AfroPunk Festival WeekendAP_lineup_fbcover

A local Brooklyn Music festival taking place in late August the newly started series has seen popularity on par with Governor’s Ball. Featuring artists like ?uestlove, Theophilus London, The Coup, The Skins, D’Angelo and Alice Smith the festival draws crowds from everywhere not just for the festivities but the eclectic fashions and cultural attractions and displays. I’m looking forward to hearing what’s in store for this year’s weekend and the wonderful festivities in store.

So for a final round up of all things music before heading into Labor Day, how does this series sound?
