Manus x Machina
All the interweb is abuzz with the talk of the 2016 Met Ball, and like everyone else I was all too excited to see the red carpet looks. Manus x Machina is an interesting theme given the growing influence of technology on how most of the world’s fashions are created – with the dawn of 3-D printing, and print productions. etc.
As always the gala’s theme is based around the year’s Costume Institute’s theme for the Spring Exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art here in New York City. This year’s theme ” Manus x Machina: Fashion in an age of Technology” (open from May 5th through August 14th” focuses on how designers are incorporating handmade and machine-made fabrics and prints in the creation of haute couture and avant-garde ready-to-wear. It feautures :
“…more than 170 examples of haute couture and avant-garde ready-to-wear, dating from the early 1900s to the present. The exhibition addresses the founding of the haute couture in the 19th century, when the sewing machine was invented, and the emergence of a distinction between the hand (manus) and the machine (machina) at the onset of industrialization and mass production.”
With designs from the likes of: Cristobal Balenciaga, Pierre Cardin, Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel, Giles Deacon, Christian Dior, Alber Elbaz (Lanvin), John Galliano (Christian Dior, Maison Margiela), Jean Paul Gaultier, Nicolas Ghesquière (Balenciaga, Louis Vuitton), Hubert de Givenchy, Marc Jacobs (Louis Vuitton), Christopher Kane, Mary Katrantzou, Rei Kawakubo (Comme des Garçons),Karl Lagerfeld (Chanel), Helmut Lang, Issey Miyake, and several others.

Much like the fanfare surrounding the exhibit, this year’s gala did not disappoint. Co-chaired by Anna Wintour, Idris Elba, Jonathan Ive and Taylor Swift, alongside honorary chairs Nicolas Ghesquière, Karl Lagerfeld, and Miuccia Prada, the evening was one filled of amazing looks, fine dining and entertaining – and let’s not forget writing big checks!

It was also the night of the mommy-to-be, with Blake Lively, Olivia Wilde, Emily Blunt, and Kerry Washington showing of their best accessories – couture clad baby bumps! (There must be something in the water!)
I couldn’t believe the amazing looks this year although I was anticipating more avant-garde and over the top theatrics.
However Sarah Jessica Parker, Solange, sister trio Haim and Julie Macklowe gave me my fill.
I can say I am truly excited to go check out the display! Hope you guys enjoyed the review!
Hugs and Sunshine,
